You will be working with data throughout this Nanodegree program. This requires that you have some form of background on key concepts like data analytics as well as some experience working with statistical data. More specifically, your knowledge in statistics should include the following:
- Working with measures of center like mean, mode, and median.
- The theme spread of the following: standard deviation and variance
- Normal and skewed distributions
- Work with spreadsheets like Excel and Google Sheets
This course is divided into four modules as follows:
Get Acquainted with Data Visualization
Data can be presented in many different ways but, some are obviously more effective than others. This all depends on what you intend to analyze and how you want to communicate your message across. In this introductory module, you will learn the differences that data representations can make. You will end this module by building your own dashboard.
In this module, you will learn how to design a dashboard. You will learn how to build dashboards that deliver important and usable information including user need as well as key metrics. This will eventually help you create appealing dashboards for different audiences. Again, you will end this module by designing your own dashboard.
Storytelling with Data
In this third module, you will learn how to use data to tell a story from start to finish. You will learn how to use data and stats to construct an end to end analysis. You will learn how to define problems and apply data and certain analysis to create the best possible representation, followed by identifying limits or biases. You will end this module by building your own data story.
Advanced Storytelling Abilities
In this module, you will learn how to bring your data to life with advanced story telling skills. You will be introduced to the ins and outs of Tableau, where you will learn how to add animations that bring all the details of your story to life. By the end of this module, which is also the end of the Nanodegree course, you will be able to create an animation of your own data story, getting as innovative and creative as your knowledge allows.

Previous learners’ experience with the course
This is a fairly new Nanodegree course from Udacity. However, those who have taken the course seem satisfied. Here is what some of them had to say:
“The written guides are clear and aesthetically pleasing. Although I usually expect a MOOC to have more lecture content, it turns out that it works well to present information about data visualization as text and visualizations (if done properly.). It helps that Udacity’s overhauled platform is easy to navigate and looks better than the old system they had a year or two ago.” – hamelg
“The program not only focuses on relevant data storytelling and visualization skills, but Udacity’s curriculum experts were also amazing at developing a truly engaging and valuable learning experience.” Ben Jones
